The State of Remote Development in 2026

Five years ago, "remote development" meant SSH into a server and editing files in vim. Today, the landscape is radically different. Cloud IDEs, tunneled workspaces, and AI-powered coding assistants have changed how and where developers write code.

The Three Models

Modern remote development falls into three categories, each with distinct tradeoffs:

1. Cloud-Hosted IDEs

GitHub Codespaces, Gitpod, and similar services run your entire development environment in a cloud VM. Great for standardized setups, but you're limited by their compute tiers, pricing, and network latency to the VM.

2. Remote SSH

VS Code Remote SSH lets you connect to any machine with an SSH server. Powerful and flexible, but requires network configuration (open ports, VPNs, or tailnets) and doesn't work well from restricted networks.

3. Tunneled Access

Tools like MR Coder, VS Code Tunnels, and ngrok create outbound tunnels from your local machine to a public endpoint. No firewall changes needed, and you get the full power of your local hardware. The tradeoff is the tunnel itself needs to stay running.

Why Tunneled Access Is Winning

We're seeing a clear trend toward tunneled access for several reasons:

  • Hardware gets faster — Your local machine likely has more RAM, faster SSD, and a better GPU than any cloud VM in the same price range.
  • AI needs local context — AI coding assistants work best with full access to your filesystem, Git history, and running processes. Local is king.
  • Zero config— Modern tunnel tools require no firewall changes, no static IPs, and no VPN setup. One command and you're live.
  • Cost — Your machine is already paid for. Cloud VMs charge by the hour.

Where MR Coder Fits

MR Coder sits squarely in the tunneled access category, but with a key difference: we integrate directly into VS Code as an extension, not a standalone CLI. This means:

  • No terminal commands to remember
  • Tunnel lifecycle tied to your editor session
  • Device management from a web dashboard
  • Custom subdomains under a managed domain
  • Built-in authentication proxy

The future of development is local compute, global access. We're building the infrastructure to make that seamless.
