MR Coder Provider
Connect to Claude models through the MR Coder API — no direct Anthropic API key required. Use OAuth browser login or an MR Coder API key.
The MR Coder provider routes your requests through mr-coder.io and uses admin-connected Claude.ai OAuth accounts for model access. Your messages are processed in real-time and never stored.
What Is the MR Coder Provider?
The MR Coder provider is an alternative to using a direct Anthropic API key. Instead of bringing your own Claude API key, you connect through the MR Coder infrastructure which provides:
No Anthropic key needed
Access Claude Opus 4.8, Sonnet 4.6, and Haiku 5.5 without a direct Anthropic account
Secure API key routing
Requests are routed through mr-coder.io — your messages are processed, never stored
Web + Extension
Same account works in both the web chat at mr-coder.io and the VS Code extension
All Claude models
Opus 4.8, Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, Haiku 5.5 — full model selection
Connection Methods
There are two ways to connect. Both are equally secure — choose whichever is more convenient.
OAuth Browser Login (Recommended)
The fastest way to connect. Opens your browser, you log in to MR Coder, and the extension receives a secure token automatically.
Open the MR Multi Coder Settings panel (click the gear icon in the sidebar or run MR Multi Coder: Open Settings from the Command Palette).
Under the MR Coder provider section, click "Connect with MR Coder".
Your browser opens to mr-coder.io/login. Log in with your email (or create a free account).
Approve the connection. The browser redirects back to VS Code and the extension stores a secure API key in SecretStorage (never in settings.json).
Select MR Coder as your provider from the chip in the chat. Start coding.
Manual API Key
If you already have an MR Coder API key (starts with sk-mr-), you can paste it directly.
Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P / Cmd+Shift+P).
Run MR Multi Coder: Set MR Coder API Key.
Paste your key. It's stored in VS Code SecretStorage — encrypted, never synced, never logged.
How the Service Works
You type a message in the extension
↓
Extension sends request to api.mr-coder.io/v1/messages
↓
Server resolves your API key → finds an available OAuth account
↓
Exchanges OAuth token for a short-lived Anthropic API key
↓
Calls the Anthropic API with the temporary key → streams response back to you
The temporary API key is created per-request and expires after use. Your messages are streamed through the service in real-time — they are never stored, logged, or used for training.
Security & Privacy
Keys never leave SecretStorage
Your API key is encrypted by VS Code and never written to settings.json, logs, or synced storage.
Zero-knowledge service
Your API key is only used to authenticate your session. It is never sent to the model provider — a temporary exchange token is used instead.
Ephemeral API keys
Each request uses a one-time Anthropic API key that expires after the call. No persistent credentials on the server.
Open architecture
The extension source is open. You can verify that no telemetry or data collection happens without your consent.
Troubleshooting
"Authentication failed" when sending a message
Your API key may have expired. Open Settings and click "Connect with MR Coder" again to refresh it. If you pasted a manual key, verify it starts with sk-mr-.
"Rate limit" or 429 errors
The service pools multiple OAuth accounts. If all accounts are busy, you'll see a rate limit. Wait 30 seconds and retry, or try a different model (Haiku has the highest limits).
Browser doesn't redirect back to VS Code
Make sure VS Code is handling vscode:// URIs. On some Linux distros, run: xdg-mime default code.desktop x-scheme-handler/vscode
Want to switch to a direct Anthropic key instead
Run "MR Multi Coder: Set Claude API Key" from the Command Palette and paste your sk-ant-* key. Then switch the provider chip to "Claude (API & Auth)" instead of "MR Coder".
